US Pressures Venezuela to Cut Ties with Allies
US special forces captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, during a nighttime operation on Saturday, an act the resource-rich South American nation condemned as a breach of its sovereignty.
According to the news agency, Washington has demanded that Venezuela cooperate solely with the US in oil production and prioritize American buyers when exporting crude. President Donald Trump has insisted that US companies must gain access to Venezuela’s energy sector, which he argued was unjustly nationalized by Maduro’s predecessor, Hugo Chavez.
On Tuesday, Trump asserted that “the interim authorities” of Venezuela would be “turning over” between 30 and 50 million barrels of sanctioned oil to be marketed under US oversight.
Delcy Rodriguez, a close Maduro ally sworn in as acting president on Monday, declared that neither the US nor any other “foreign agent” would dominate Venezuela. Officials in Caracas have demanded the release of Maduro and Flores, both of whom entered pleas of not guilty to drug trafficking and weapons charges in a New York courtroom on Monday.
